There is a saying that old is gold, which refers to our senior citizens.
Every year on the 21st of August, we used to celebrate The World Senior Citizens Day.
This aim of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about the condition of the older people and to support them.
This day was first celebrated on 1st October 1991. This day is celebrated to create the awareness of the issues and factors that affect older adults such as deterioration , abuse , etc. This day also recognizes and acknowledges the contribution of older people to society because experience comes with age and older people are the backbone of every family and country.
This Day is also celebrated to thank the older people, for doing everything selflessly throughout their lives for their children and grandchildren.
The World Senior Citizen’s Day was first celebrated in the year 1988, by the former Prime Minister of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan.
Reagan was the first one who announced to celebrate the Day of the third age people.
WHO ARE CONSIDERED AS SENIOR CITIZENS?
As we are talking about senior citizen day, some wanted to know about the fact that what is the age where we call any person a senior citizen?
We have the answer to this question.
Senior Citizen, according to the law is any person who attained the age of sixty years or above that.
PROBLEMS AND ISSUES FACED BY THE SENIOR CITIZENS:

Mental health such as depression and stress are common in senior citizens. The reason behind this is that they think so much about the things that happen around them. One more reason is the behaviour and treatment of the family members to them.
Constipation is a common disease that occurs with ageing. The major reason for constipation could be not having a well-balanced diet.
Physical health gets down by ageing. The bones and muscles shrink and lose strength and flexibility. Therefore the older adults get physical injury and get problems in their everyday routine.
HIV/AIDS OR OTHER SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES:
AIDS is an incurable disease. And if older adults have this problem then they have many problems. If they are suffering from HIV then they are in danger.
Malnutrition in older adults could be due to alcoholism,depression and reduced social connection.
Vision and hearing are very common sensory impairments that occur due to ageing. It could not be overcomed,but by using lens glasses, vision problems can be cured and by using hearing aids, hearing issues can be cured.
Bladder control is a serious issue in senior citizens. If they control their urine then they will have many bladder issues such as stone in the kidney.
Oral health is another issue in older adults. Their oral health becomes bad by ageing.
Substance abuse such as alcohol and drug consumption are seen in some senior citizens. A survey says that the number of older adults with substance abuse are expected to become double in 2020.

Our older adults who did everything for happiness, in their whole life. Now on this senior citizens day, it’s our duty to make them laugh and keep on smiling.
