Mahashivratri is the greatest festival of Hindus, but in recent years all religions people celebrate this special festival. It is annually festival which comes every year in luni solar month according to Indian Hindu calendar. Mahashivratri is totally dedicated to lord Shiva we worship of lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the auspicious occasion of mahashivratri. On the festival of mahashivratri lord Shiva performs a great heavenly dance at Kailash parvat in heaven.

According to Hindu calendar, mahashivratri is celebrated in thirteenth/ fourteenth day of phalgun month which comes in late winters, and before the starting of summer. The main significance of celebrating mahashivratri is that, maha means great and shivaratri means the night of lord Shiva, so the full sense of mahashivratri is “great night of lord Shiva.”

 According to Indian Hindu culture and scriptures, mahashivratri is the day of marriage between the lords Shiva and Goddess Parvati. People take fasting on this auspicious festival of mahashivratri and all night vigil without taking any type of wheat or food. This festival is celebrated in many countries like India, Myanmar, Burma, South Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Tobago, etc, but most commonly it is celebrated in India with lots of love, prosperity and happiness. As we know that mahashivratri is the festival of Hinduism which is a remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance.

On the auspicious day of mahashivaratri, people go fasting, yoga, meditations for lord Shiva, and visit lots of different types of temples of lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this day people give lots of charity in orphanages, in old age homes, in childcare centers. At the evening of Mahashivaratri Peoples make lots of thandai, bhang which is most favorite of lord Shiva in a big drum for drinking as a gift of lord Shiva.

Mahashivaratri has different names according to different places like in Kashmir this festival is called har-ratri. Mahasivaratri is very important to the seekers who walk the spiritual path. It is also very important for those who are under family circumstances, and who are immersed in the aspirations of the world. On a mahasivratri day, the devotees of Shiva pray to pray for the whole night.

 Some people also fast without being waterless. It is prescribed in religious texts that with the worship of Lord Shiva all worldly desires are fulfilled. If not in accordance with ethics, lord Shiva is pleased either by worshiping in an ordinary manner or by remembering only them. This festival gives us lots of sweet lessons for our life like honesty, a good habit of yoga and meditation, which gives us peace in our souls and many lessons if we want to take it.

On this precious occasion of Maha Shivaratri people pray for their families long life, good health and wellness, happiness for them. People give priority to smoking, ganja, charas, Amal, bhang and many other types of narcotics on the day of mahashivaratri. So this festival gives us the best things in our life to lord Shiva.
